Mayor's Parlour Thursday 26th April 2018

I attended the Todmorden Choral Society with Todmorden Orchestra performance of the oratorio Creation by Haydn this week. Although I recognised certain parts of this impressive work, I had never heard a complete performance. It was so exciting! A great experience in a packed Town Hall. Nearly seventy members of the Choir were in fine voice ably supported by the orchestra and the brilliant trio of soloists who, as the Angels, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael sang the Biblical text.

We are fortunate to live in an area with such a great variety of music. Something for everyone. The Annual Folk Festival is coming soon with a Ceilidh, Music Workshops, concerts and the performances of the Morris Dancing Teams that converge on Todmorden for the weekend. My favourite part. I love to watch the colourfully dressed troops.

The Annual Anniversary concert of Todmorden Community Brass band will be held at Central Methodists this weekend. Worth going to. A very enjoyable experience with an organisation that believes music and cake make a perfect partnership. All three events uplifting in their own way and life enhancing. And if these don’t appeal, live music is available in pubs about the town.

I know Todmorden Community College has a special place in the town. Many people have good memories of working or studying there so the organisers of the new Todmorden Learning Centre are asking for their help. They are looking for information about the history of the building; and particularly, photographs. If you have any which include the interior, especially pictures of the Hall they wish to restore to its former glory, they would be grateful if you would contact them. A member of the TLC is available in the College Monday to Friday mornings.

On a more serious note, cancer is a disease which can affect anyone without rhyme or reason. Former sufferers or those undergoing treatment can benefit from organisations like Calderdale Women’s Cancer Support Network. It meets in Central Methodists on the last Saturday of most months. It provides access to advice, friendship, other useful organisations, therapies, activities and new skills aimed at improving wellbeing. It even offers lunch. Contact details on the website. Or ring 07794 688 180.

We have had a hint of summer this last week. Several days of warm weather followed inevitably by rain was enough to bring out the blossom. Spring has been reported to be three weeks late this year but the natural world seems to be catching up. All the daffodils are out in gardens and on road verges, and the baskets on railings round the town are nearly at their best. Now is the time to get out and enjoy the bounty.
